Objectivist Advertising Poster Series
Objectivist Advertising is a series of street poster advertisements illustrating the various fictional businesses at the heart of Ayn Rand’s classic novels The Fountainhead (p. 1943) and Atlas Shrugged (p. 1957).
By utilizing the visual style of the mid-century modernist design masters, the work proposes a historical context for the fictional protagonists, equating the modernist vision (or dogma) of a better world through universally applied design principles to the revolutionary, if impractical, philosophy of objectivism.

Each poster is coded with visual and verbal symbols and references to the rich narrative Rand created in her two primary novels, even imagining their worlds to be continuous and the same. Each poster is adorned with an embossed government label which contains the entire text of Directive 10-289 from Atlas Shrugged. It was with this directive that the government attempted to stifle the productiveness of the protagonists businesses with far-reaching regulations. The label is a purposeful blemish on the beautiful surface of the poster—a symbol of bureaucracy and control.
The posters also reference forms from key works by modernist masters Joseph Muller-Brockmann, Armin Hofmann, Joseph Albers and Emil Ruder.

This series is a celebration and critique of both the philosophy proposed by Rand’s objectivism and the visual rules of swiss-style international modernism. Both philosophies were visionary, courageous, and brilliant as well as unflinchingly rigid and ultimately unattainable.
